About Allgäu High Alps Nature Reserve

The Allgäu High Alps Nature Reserve (Naturschutzgebiet Allgäuer Hochalpen) spans parts of the German federal states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, encompassing some of the most dramatic and unspoiled sections of the Northern Limestone Alps. Covering a vast area characterized by steep peaks, deep valleys, alpine meadows, and crystal-clear mountain lakes, this reserve preserves a rich mosaic of flora and fauna adapted to high-altitude conditions. It protects endemic and rare species such as the Alpine ibex, chamois, marmots, and a variety of rare alpine plants including edelweiss. Historically, the region has been valued since the 19th century for its natural beauty and alpine culture, with traditional mountain farming harmonizing with conservation efforts. The reserve offers numerous well-maintained and marked hiking trails ranging from gentle nature walks to challenging alpine routes, including the famous Heilbronn Way (Heilbronner Weg), renowned as one of the most spectacular via ferrata routes in the Alps. Visitors can explore notable landmarks like the Großer Wilder and Trettach peaks, the scenic Kuhgehrenspitze, and alpine huts offering refreshments and overnight stays. Winter transforms the area into a haven for ski touring and snowshoe hiking. The reserve’s remote character, combined with accessibility via towns such as Oberstdorf and Bad Hindelang, attracts outdoor enthusiasts seeking pristine mountain experiences away from mass tourism, while emphasizing conservation and respect for fragile alpine ecosystems.
